An Acid Citrate-dextrose Solution with Low Water Volume and Low Dextrose Concentration.

چکیده
The blood preservative introduced by Loutit and Mollison (1) consisting essentially of a sodium citrate-dextrose mixture of relatively low pH, has proved superior to previously employed preserving fluids. The original formula and many subsequent modifications have a rather high volume. This produces considerable dilution of the plasma proteins. The purpose of this study, begun in June 1944, was to obtain an A.C.D. solution of lower volume, so as to maintain an optimal concentration of plasma proteins, maintain or improve the capacity to preserve erythrocytes, and at the same time insure maximal stability of the resulting plasma. The first solution tested was one proposed by Rapport, as follows: Sodium citrate (trisodium dihydric) 1.66 grams Citric acid (monohydric) 0.59 gram Distilled water 100 ml.

Storage of blood and the mean corpuscular volume.
The mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of blood after storage for up to 24 days under various temperature conditions in ethylene diamine tetracetic acid, acid citrate dextrose, citrate phosphate dextrose, and Alsever's solution was measured using the Coulter S. Storage of blood overnight at 23 degrees centigrade increased the MCV, while there was no significant change after similar storage at 4 degr...
متن کاملAcid-base balance in acute gastrointestinal bleeding.
Acid-base balance has been studied in 21 patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding. A low plasma bicarbonate concentration was found in nine patients, accompanied in each case by a base deficit of more than 3 mEq/litre, indicating a metabolic acidosis. Three patients had a low blood pH. Hyperlactataemia appeared to be a major cause of the acidosis. This was not accompanied by a raised...
متن کاملThe influence of extraneous factors on Coulter S measurement of the mean corpuscular volume.
Alteration in the temperature of the Isoton diluent in a Coulter model S counter over a range of possible laboratory working temperatures produced a change in the mean corpuscular volume using EDTA and dipotassium acid citrate dextrose blood and a commercial control, 4C. Contamination of the Isoton diluent with hypochlorite solution, used to clean the Coulter model S, may increase the mean corp...
متن کاملAcid-base Changes following Exchange Transfusion with Citrated Blood
The acid-citrate-dextrose (ACD) solution used to preserve blood consists in effect of 2 parts trisodium citrate to 1 part citric acid. It forms a buffer solution such that the pH of bank blood less than 5 days old is, in our experience, 6 6 ± 0 * 2. It can be predicted, therefore, that infusion of ACD blood must lead to an initial acidosis, and that this will in due course be replaced by a meta...
متن کاملCellular aggregation and destruction during blood circulation and oxygenation.
Platelet and leucocyte aggregation and severe haemolysis may occur in blood during the preparation of an extracorporeal circuit for open-heart surgery. Experiments with dog blood showed that both processes result from bubble oxygenation but not from circulation of diluted blood and that they appear to be inhibited by the presence of acid citrate dextrose and heparin, or citrate phosphate dextro...
